Kelenföld Reformed Church

Although exiting the underground station the view is dominated by the buildings of Allee Shopping Mall and the Market Hall of Fehérvári Street the Reformed Church of Kelenföld on the other side also claims attention.

The church designed by István Medgyaszay with tenancy houses on both sides opened in 1929. The three buildings were constructed for the local Adventist community as part of the mixed concept of religious purposes and investment.

Medgyaszay, as a representative of Art Noveau in Hungary (Secession), softened the reinforced concrete structure with rumble stone cover and folklore motifs.

The patron of the construction was Governor Miklós Horthy himself, who even took part in the dedication ceremony in November, 1930.

Financing the construction posed a considerable challenge to the community. Pastor Rev. Andor Sebestyén even had to ask Dutch and American Reformed communities for help. It was a heavy financial burden to the Reformed Church and the local reformed community as well, as it is specified in the list of the generous donors in the “Golden Book” published in 1935.

Despite initial difficulties the church still belongs to the Reformed Church with worships on every Sunday.
